Regeneration of Faleron Bay
From the Athens 2004 Olympic Games to the post-Olympic era

Faleron, the seafront of Athens is situated 6 km South West of the town centre to which it is connected via Sygrou Avenue.

Athens' relation to the sea, however, remained undefßned over the years both functionally and aesthetically.

The situation deteriorated in the 1960's with the construction of a major highway along the Faleron coast, which created an extensive no-man's land and condemned the residents to noise, pollution and risk of floods.
In 1999 the Athens Planning Organisation took the opportunity of the forthcomßng Olympic Games to initiate a new re-development effort through a Master Plan for the whole area. Faleron was designated to host three Olympic Venues in 2004: Beach Volleyball, Handball and Tae Kwon Do.

"Faleron 21 ", a scientific consulting group undertook the task of implementing the re-development program. Due to rigid time constraints, the planning had to be executed in two phases: the Olympic phase and the post-Olympic phase.

The planning began with the complete post Olympic phase and was adjusted for the requirements of the Olympic Games. This resulted in the temporary suspension of certain important infrastructure works.

The planning objectives of the re-development program are as follows:
to connect the urban fabric with the coastal strip,

  • to create an urban seafront and to enhance the natural and historical environment of the Faleron landscape,
  • to protect the Faleron neighborhoods from floods and to solve the broader water flooding problems of the Athens basin,
  • to remedy the negative impacts created by the raised coastal traffic artery and thus to upgrade the nearby housing environment,
  • to establish a metropolitan focus by providing opportunities for athletic, recreational and cultural activities.

The main interventions for the Olympic phase were:

  • Ïn the one hand, infrastructure projects, such as: the complete redevelopment of the seafront, the construction of the Ilissos estuary and of the flood-protection dry canals, the construction of the Esplanade and tram line.
  • Ïn the other hand building projects, such as: the Beach Volley open stadium with its auxiliary facilities, the Athletic Marina development, the Receptßon and Information building at the end of the Esplanade, the Handball, Tae Kwon Do Stadium for 8,000 spectators.

The main interventions scheduled for the post-Olympic phase are: the relocation of the coastal traffic artery further to the south, the construction of a large canal and the remaining projects for the anti-flooding protection of the broader area, the construction of two pedestrian and automobile flyovers connecting the urban fabric to the sea, as well as the creation of the Ecological Park between the two estuaries of the Kifissos and Ilissos rivers.
