- A concern about wetlands

It is well-known that the founder and president of TPA, architect and planner Thymio Papayannis, has been seriously concerned since the early 1980s about the conservation of nature and the wise use of natural resources. Besides various studies, books and papers on this critical issue, he has played a key role in the establishment of WWF Greece (and is currently its president), the Society for the Protection of Prespa and the Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre. In 1992 he was responsible for launching the Mediterranean Wetlands Initiative (MedWet) under the Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1971) and has co-ordinated it until July 2001; he still remains senior advisor of MedWet.

In this capacity, he has authored a book on the experience gained through MedWet. Published in Arles, France in November 2002, in French, English and Spanish, Regional Action for Wetlands: The Mediterranean Experience traces MedWet from its early stages as an EC-funded project to a regional network involving 25 states, and various international and non-governmental organisations. The book attempts to draw lessons from both positive and negative developments, and to provide guidance for similar regional initiatives in other parts of the world. Already such efforts have started in the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and Mesoamerica using MedWet as a model.

The book is available from anagno@medwet.org
